If you are bored of making regular yellow lentils then make this dal for a change. Urad dal has numerous health benefits. The flavour is unique and you can have it with rice or roti both goes well with it.
Ingredients:
2 cups whole urad dal
4 cups water
1 medium size onion thinly chopped
2 small tomatoes finely chopped
3 green chillies finely chopped
4 whole garlic cloves
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp red chilly powder
1 tsp crushed karuri methi/ dry fenugreek leaves
Salt as per taste
4 tbsp oil.
Method:
To cook Dal :
Wash dal well and transfer it into pressure cooker. Add 4 cups water and 4 garlic cloves. Close the lid and let the dal soak for half an hour. After half an hour switch on the flame and cook the dal on medium high flame upto 7 whistles. Switch off and let it cool down.
To cook tempering curry:
Heat a small kadai/ wok add oil. Once the oil is hot add in cumin seeds. And then add in onion. Saute for few minutes. Add tomatoes and chilly. Saute well for a few minutes. Add the salt and spices and saute well. Once its mushy and oil leaves out add in crushed kasuri methi and mix well. Switch off.
Maah Dal :
Open the lid of cooled down pressure cooker and give a stir add in the tempered curry and mix generously. Check for seasoning if anything is less then add. Replace the lid of the pressure cooker and again cook it on medium flame upto 3 whistles and switch off.
