This is my mom's recipe. The combination of these two lentils is her favorite. Its a simple dal which goes well with rice. My mom usually prepares spicy chutney to along with it.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup tur dal/ split pigeon peas
1/2 cup masoor dal/ red lentils
1 medium onion thinly sliced
1 big tomato chopped
5 garlic pearls
2 slit green chillies
1 tbsp cumin seeds/ zeera
1 1/2 tsp red chilly powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp fennel seed powder
Oil
Salt as per taste
Method:
Wash Dal's in few changes of water and soak them for 20min in fresh cool water. Then drain and transfer into pressure cooker, add in 4 cups of water, garlic pearls, red chilly powder, salt, turmeric, green chilly and tomato, stir well and pressure cook on high flame for 5 minutes and then on medium flame for 10 minutes. Once the pressure cooker is cooled down open the lid and mash the dal with wooden spatula until smooth. Put it back on stove with low flame. Now prepare the tempering. In a sauce pan heat 2 tbsp oil add in cumin seeds once they crackle add in thinly sliced onion. Fry it until onions are browned a little. Pour this bhagaar/ tempering into dal and mix well. Next add in fennel seeds powder and stir well. Check for seasoning. If the dal is thick add in more water and boil for few more minutes. Dal is ready. Serve with hot rice.
